A Warm Welcome…
Welcome to our website. This website will concentrate on Mullingar’s music scene. Mullingar’s music scene has seen many bands claim national and international status. We hope you enjoy the content. All your comments and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Over the years Mullingar has been synonymous with musical talent. Joe Dolan & The Drifters, Foster& Allen, The Swarbriggs and more recently the success that has come to Niall Horan through the band One Direction.
Mullingar has had a town band since 1879. It was founded by Father Polland. In its earlier years the local military supplied most of its members . The band has a dual role of a marching band and a concert band. It has won top awards in Ireland and the UK.
The town has also a strong tradition with traditional Irish music. Aras an Mhuilinn the regional resource centre for counties Westmeath, Longford, Offaly and Laois is based in the town. The centre was established by Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann and Meitheal Lartire . It is a state of the art facility for traditional classes in music, dance and language. These classes are run on a weekly basis. These are available to both community groups and the general public.
A town for music
The town’s renowned live venue ”The Stables” would have seen many great artists over the years. First opened in 1989 this music venue is nationally recognised. Many of our local acts debuted their live performances at the venue. The Stables hosted a wide variety of music and featured well known bands; local writer Ronan Casey has described it as an ”essential” stop for any touring act.
National, UK and international acts have started in Mullingar’s music scene, known bands like The Blizzards, The Academic, Cronin (aka The Aftermath), Peter Doran and Arrow in the Sky to name a few.
Mullingar has a live act playing in the local bars most nights. Traditional Irish sessions in The Chambers, Smiddys and Finns and an Arts centre with something for everyone’s taste.
Every week we intend to bring news on bands, album releases, and gigs. We would hope to gather a community of like-minded music fans. Can you please share any news on Mullingar’s music scene with us. Your comments and input will be greatly appreciated.
