About The Rubber Bandits

The Rubber Bandits are from Limerick and are a comedy hip hop duo. They are Blindboy Boatclub (Dave Chambers) and Mr. (Bobby) Chrome (Bob Mc Glynn). The unofficial third member of the group is Willie O’DJ, a Spin South West disk jockey who wears a mask caricaturing Fianna Fail local politician Willie O’Dea. Any performances or interviews they conceal their identity by wearing plastic shopping bags as masks.

Prior to becoming a musical act their initial exposure was from recording prank phone calls. The pranks featured on radio stations both here and abroad. They developed a comedy style than was both satirical and crude. Their work explores many significant themes in urban youth, including drug abuse and violence.

2010-11 see TV exposure for the Bandits with a weekly slot on RTE2 comedy show ‘Republic of Telly. Their first clip “The Rubber Bandits Guide to Limerick’ within seven days after broadcast had 100K YouTube views.

December 8 2010 ‘Horse Outside’ was released via iTunes and the video premiere was on The Republic of Telly. The video was a wedding scene with the exterior shots from Milford Church and the interior shots filmed in the contemplative centre in the University of Limerick. The video also featured Irish model Madeline Mulqueen playing the sought after bridesmaid at the wedding. Following its airing within three days the video had 530k views. After the video going viral CNBC and others using blogs tried to get the song to No.1. Paddy Power had the song placed 8/11 to be number one for Christmas. Unfortunately it fell short and was number two loosing to the X-Factor winner Matt Cardle.

Their association with students seen them headline large student balls in Trinity and NUIG. They have played Ireland’s renown Oxegen and Electric Picnic festivals.

“Gas C**tism”

The Rubber Bandits refer to themselves as artists rather than comedians. Their movement they refer to as “Gas C**tism”. Their discography is ‘Drawing pictures of each other smoking fags’ EP and ‘Serious About Men’ album which reached N0.16 in the Irish charts.

Blindboy while appearing on The Late Late Show in November 2016 explains “We view ourselves 100% as artists. Our artistic movement is called gas c**ntism. We use gas c**ntist inquiry as a means of using comedy and entertainment as an artistic medium – so our grounding is very academic and very solid. Gas c**ntism is a type of socially engaged art.”
