Belvedere House & Gardens
Belvedere House & Gardens is located on the north-east shore of Lough Ennell. Built in 1740 it is located six miles from Mullingar town. German-born Architect Richard Castle (1690-1751) built it as a hunting and fishing lodge for Lord Belfield (Robert Rochfort). He later became the First Earl of Belvedere. 126,000 visitors visit per year.
The Jealous Wall was built c. 1760 as a result of a quarrel between Robert Rochfort and another brother George. George owned the nearby Rochfort House (subsequently re-named Tudenham House). The Wall was built between the two houses as an artificial ruin of an abbey. Robert wished to exclude the view of his brother’s residence as he was jealous. The Earl went to enormous expense in constructing the ruin. Apparently he went to the extent of hiring the services of a celebrated Italian Architect Barrodotte to superintend its erection.
In the form of a large gothic ruin it is built in stone with a central wall. Three pointed windows high up, and five smaller round headed windows above them are within this wall. Two square wings project at either end of the wall standing some 20 metres high. The Jealous Wall still stands today. Furthermore it is said to be the largest purposely built ruin of its kind in Ireland.
Anyone wishing to visit and see all the attractions, three hours is advised. ( information courtesy of Belvederehouse.ie)
